Floating timber neighbourhood proposed for Rotterdam

Danish maritime architect Mast and development firm BIK bouw are proposing to construct a floating neighbourhood at a disused dock within the centre of Rotterdam.

The plan for the Spoorweghaven dock has acquired “preliminary assist” from the Municipality of Rotterdam, Mast stated in a press launch, with out giving particulars.

The design is for 100 reasonably priced items, public areas and industrial areas.

If constructed, Spoorweghaven could be Europe’s largest floating housing improvement.

It might encompass prefabricated cross-laminated timber buildings that may be towed into place and anchored within the harbour.

The concept is to minimise development work on web site and permit buildings to be moved or repurposed as an alternative of demolished.

The neighbourhood could be accessible by bicycle and boat and built-in into Rotterdam’s biking community.

It is going to have low-maintenance pontoons, decentralised wastewater remedy techniques, communal roof terraces, and floating gardens.

900 sq m of floating reedbeds designed by Scottish ecological engineer Biomatrix are deliberate across the web site’s perimeter to filter the water and create habitats for fish, birds and invertebrates.

It is also helpful in a flood. Mast stated Spoorweghaven “doesn’t resist the water, however rises with it”.
