World’s first low-carbon concrete rating system launched

The World Cement and Concrete Affiliation (GCCA) has unveiled what it calls the world’s first world system for ranking the carbon footprint of cement and concrete.

It says the scorecard will price merchandise on a “clear and intuitive” eight-stage scale, from “AA” to “G”.

The purpose is to spice up demand for low-carbon cement and concrete.

The rating for cement relies on kilograms of embodied carbon dioxide equal per tonne (KgCO2e/t). For concrete, it’s kilograms per cubic metre (KgCO2e/m3).

The rating is expressed as “World Warming Potential” (GWP), calculated in response to Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) requirements.

Definitions for “low carbon” and “close to zero” carbon emissions got here from the cement manufacturing definitions of the Worldwide Power Company and the GCCA 2050 Cement and Concrete Trade Roadmap for Internet Zero Concrete.

The system is designed for use with EPDs, that are third-party verified.

GCCA stated Germany has already applied a completely compliant system, developed by the German Federal Ministry for Financial Affairs and Local weather Motion and the German Cement Affiliation (VDZ).
